EXPO New Mexico

Providing location services via a mobile solution to New Mexico fair-goers.

The Challenge

Navigating the State Fair can be confusing when looking at a paper brochure that isn't able to tell you where you're at currently. Sounds like a job for location services!

With the help of a designer, I was able to craft a simple, mobile web-based application that replicates that paper brochure, but digitially, within a tiny budget for EXPO New Mexico (and to the delight of many fair-goers).

Learnings

  • The app utilized the HTML5 geolocation API, as well as the Google Maps API and JS SDK.
  • Getting an accurate location while walking around on foot was actually very difficult to get reliably. It may have just been the location of the fairgrounds in Albuquerque, but I learned that it required lots of testing to work well.
  • This was my first app utilizing Zend Framework 2. I learned a lot about dependency injection via Zend's ServiceManager construct.

Source code is not currently available.
